The CO₂ Negative Search Engine

What would you say if told you that by simply using Google you could fight climate change? You would say I’m crazy, right? Well, you might be right. Unfortunately, Google’s not fighting climate change one day at a time, but ECOSIA is.

In short, Ecosia is a Search Engine with a conscience. After just 45 searches, you will have inadvertently planted a tree. Yep, you heard me. One whole tree. On average, people use a search engine 3 or 4 times a day, which means that after a year of using Ecosia you will have removed about 566 kilos of CO² from the atmosphere! Now that may not be a patch on the 40 billion tonnes of CO² human activity releases into the air each year, but every little helps. And to top it off, it’s powered by 100% renewable energy. What’s not to like?

“Servers use a lot of power. If the internet were a country, it would rank #3 in the world in terms of electricity consumption. Internet companies bear a responsibility to mind their ecological footprint by switching to alternative, renewable energy. With our new green energy policy, we hope to lead the way.”- Ecosia

Review

I have been using Ecosia for several years now and, rather unsurprisingly, it’s not quite up to the standards of Google, but it’s come on leaps and bounds since it first began. When I first used Ecosia back in 2016, I was expecting a hot mess and to be completely honest, it wasn’t far off.

However, a few years down the line and this eco-friendly search engine has really stepped up it’s game with it’s incredibly sleek and user friendly design. Give it another 5 years, with the right amount of support, Ecosia will be playing with the big dogs. But for now, why not help them get there?

Go on… search Ecosia.
