Make Disposable Razors A Thing Of The Past
When I was first shown Safety Razors, I would be lying if I said I wasn’t slightly terrified. The double-edged wafer-thin blade reminded me a little of Sweeney Todd. But I am pleased to tell you, that by using this nifty contraption you will save money, get a closer shave and help the planet!
The standard disposable razor is a hybrid of different materials, from plastic for the handle, rubber for good grip and metal for the blade; making it an all-round recycling disaster. Sadly, these different components mean that recycling facilities are unable to separate the different materials used, so the majority end up in the dreaded landfill. Not to mention, the average person uses a razor just once or twice before tossing it in the bin! Considering 28% of men shave on a daily basis, I think it’s fair to say that disposable razors are not sustainable.
The safety razor, however usually consists of one material, stainless steel, which is sometimes combined with wood or bamboo. The benefit of the stainless steel design means that the razor can last years! All you need to do is to remove the razor head and replace the blade itself. Once you’ve finished using the razor blade, you can discard of it in an empty tin can (for safety reasons) and then pop it in recycling.
When I was shopping around for safety razors I found that the Bambaw Stainless Steel Razor was most to my liking, partly due to the sleek design, handy razor stand and their impressive business model. Bambaw’s mission is to “rethink the way we consume and offer durable alternatives to wasteful products” which they like to call zero-waste swaps.
When it comes to ease of use, if I’m being completely honest, the name “safety” is a little ironic. On my first try I managed to nick myself twice (by nick I mean cut off a decent chunk of flesh), which I’ve never done with a disposable razor. But don’t let this put you off, it just takes getting used to the razor head being static, especially if you’re shaving around knobbly knees. After 3 or 4 uses, you’ll be a safety razor pro! But I can easily say that I experienced a much closer shave than any razor has given me in my 26 years on this planet, meaning that my legs felt smoother and the hair took longer to grow back!
Bambaw’s Safety Razor is currently on Amazon for just £15.49 (which isn’t bad for a durable razor). You can then buy a pack of 100 Astra Razor Blades for just £9.75. Yep you read that right, 100 blades!
So what are you waiting for? Make your zero-waste swap today!
